Four peacekeepers from the UN Disengagement Observer Force, also known as UNDOF, were detained on Tuesday by an unidentified armed group.

The peacekeepers, from the Philippines Battalion, were patrolling in the Area of Separation, near Al Jamlah.

UNDOF has been deployed in the Golan Heights since 1974, to maintain a ceasefire between Israeli and Syrian forces and to supervise the implementation of the Disengagement of Forces Agreement between Israel and Syria.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the detention of the four UNDOF peacekeepers and reminded all actors in Syria that UNDOF is mandated to monitor the disengagement agreement.

He also called on all parties to respect UNDOF's freedom of movement, safety and security.

Efforts are under way to secure the release of the peacekeepers.

Gerry Adams, United Nations.
