The First Lady of Nigeria, Her Excellency Dame (Dr) Patience Goodluck Jonathan, was appointed on Friday as the Child Online Protection Champion of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The Child Online Protection initiative aims to identify risks and vulnerabilities to children in cyberspace, create awareness, develop practical tools to help minimize risk, and share knowledge and experience.
Hamadoun I. Touré, Secretary-General of the ITU, says “In this new digital world, we all have a special responsibility to ensure the safety and security of young people in the online world, just as we do offline.”
Among her responsibilities, the First Lady will work toward creating a safe environment for children while they are on the internet, as well as push for reforms not only in the Africa region but across the globe.
