Expert calls for more commitment to reduce road traffic deaths in AfricaListen /
Whether by car, motorbike or on foot, Africa is on the move.
But with the continent leading the world in road traffic fatalities, a public health specialist from Kenya is urging African governments to do more to prevent these deaths.
Dr. Wilson Odero, who teaches at Moi University in western Kenya, says nearly 65 per cent of all road deaths in Africa occur in just seven countries, with more than 14,000 killed annually in South Africa alone.
UN Radio's Patrick Maigua in Geneva caught up with Dr. Odero during a UN symposium held in connection with Global Road Safety Week (6 – 12 May), to find out what's behind the numbers.
