The elections in Pakistan this past weekend were a significant step forward for democracy in the country, according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr. Ban also applauded the courage and determination of political parties and election workers to engage in the process despite the challenging security situation ahead of the vote, which took place on Saturday.

He said the national and provincial elections marked the first-ever transition in Pakistan from one civilian government to another.

Mr. Ban was also pleased at the significant turnout for the elections, especially young people and first-time voters.

He also noted the increase in women's participation but regretted that in some parts of the country women had been deterred from voting.
