African leaders rally support for Global Fund to fight diseasesListen /
Leaders of several African countries have called on partners around the world to support the fundraising efforts of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The appeal has been made at a summit meeting of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organization.
The AU Chairperson, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, asked more than 30 heads of state to appeal to everyone to support the Global Fund's goal of raising US$ 15 billion in its once-every-three-years replenishment effort.
In a declaration issued on Monday, African heads of state say there are united in their determination to defeat HIV and AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
