UN agencies warn of a humanitarian crisis in eastern Mali

• Several UN agencies are warning of an acute humanitarian crisis in Gao in eastern Mali. Gao was affected by the fighting that broke out in 2012 in northern Mali between the national army and armed rebels. A recent UN inter-agency mission to Gao to assess humanitarian needs found that the water supply needs rehabilitation. It also found that there is a need for increased food assistance.

San people of Southern Africa face challenges, says an activist

• The 12th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues ends on Friday, 31 May. Since Monday last week, representatives of indigenous peoples from around the world have been reviewing progress that has been made in promoting their rights. A representative of the San people of Southern Africa says his community is facing challenges.
