UN Forum in Turkey discusses financing for sustainable forestsListen /
How can countries access and get enough financing to make forests sustainable for the future, is the most important question delegates are discussing at the UN Forum on Forests in Istanbul, Turkey.
Jan McAlpine, the Director of the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat says delegates are discussing where the gaps are; what countries need and what the forum can conclude at this session, what governments themselves might decide to do.
Asked about her expectations for the outcome of the conference, Ms. McAlpine tells UN Radio there are going to be some pretty solid decisions of the forum.
"That recognize, not only recognize, and point out areas that people have missed about the importance of forests such as economic development contributions of forests to the world but also to look very carefully at what further we need to do to catalyze financing at sustainable levels for forests and for trees outside forests."
Ms. McAlpine says she's positive the forum will also decide that there is a special need for attention to be paid to financing for low forest- cover countries, small island developing states and least developed countries.
