UN expert welcomes G8 initiative to combat sexual violence in conflict

The world's eight richest countries this week pledged $36 million to tackle sexual violence in conflict.

In welcoming the G8 initiative, Zainab Bangura, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, said there will be no hiding place for perpetrators of these crimes.

American singer Katy Perry recently visited Madagascar to draw attention to the issue of child poverty.

She travelled on behalf of UNICEF, where she stopped at agency projects related to health, education and nutrition.

 

First woman private space explorer advocates for more girls in Maths and Science

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first woman in space.

Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian-American engineer and serial tech entrepreneur, believes more women and girls should be encouraged to pursue careers in Maths and Science.

In connection with the International Day of Human Space Flight, observed on 12 April, UN Radio spoke to Mrs. Ansari who has the distinction of being the first woman private space explorer.
