A UN independent expert is disappointed that his upcoming mission to Bahrain has been postponed by the government.

UN Special Rapporteur on torture Juan E. Méndez, who was scheduled to visit Bahrain in early May, says this is the second time his travel there has been postponed at very short notice.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mendez calls the postponement "effectively a cancellation" as no alternative dates were proposed.

He adds that due to the sensitivity of his mandate, there will never be a "perfect time" to visit Bahrain, which is true for any country he travels to.

The UN Rapporteur notes that Bahrain's government is facing many challenges in light of ongoing tensions in the country.

The visit, he says, would have been conducted in the spirit of cooperation.
