UN envoy condemns terrorist attacks in Mogadishu

• The bomb attack at Somalia's Supreme Court on 14 April was condemned by the top UN envoy for the country. The Al Shabaab insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack. More than 30 people including women and at least one child were killed in the attack which has been described as a last-ditch attempt by a group on the run.

The UN commemorates Rwandan genocide 

• The United Nations this week commemorated the anniversary of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The event at UN Headquarters in New York recalls the slaughter by extremist Hutus of approximately 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. It also pays tribute to those who risked their lives to save their fellow citizens.

Education critical to empower indigenous women in Kenya, says an activist

• Indigenous women in Kenya face a number of difficulties according to a Kenyan activist who attended a recent UN meeting on women. They include gender-based violence and female genital mutilation. The Kenyan activist says that education is critical for the empowerment of indigenous women in the country.
