UN envoy condemns killing of journalist in SomaliaListen /
The top UN official in Somalia has condemned the latest murder of a journalist in the country.
Dr. Augustine Mahiga, head of the UN Political Office in Somalia, said he was shocked and saddened by the killing of Mohamed Ibrahim Rageh who was shot on Sunday evening in the capital, Mogadishu.
Rageh had worked with Radio Mogadishu and Somali National Television.
According to the UN envoy, he was the fourth journalist to be killed in the country so far this year.
Dr. Mahiga called on the Somali authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
He said Somali journalists will keep exercising their profession, which he called "the backbone of any peace-building efforts and sustainable democracy," and that the international community is ready to stand by them.
