United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling for adequate resources to support UN peacekeeping missions in their work to prevent sexual violence in conflict.

Mr. Ban spoke in the Security Council as it discussed women and peace and security with a special focus on sexual violence in conflict.

Secretary-General Ban said the United Nations system is engaged in various activities to prevent sexual violence in conflict and when it has occurred to prosecute those responsible.

He cited, as one example, the Prosecution Support Cells in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) created by the Government and supported by the UN mission there.

"We have now deployed eight Women Protection Advisors in South Sudan, where UNMISS is the first peace mission to budget for and appoint WPAs. We are also recruiting WPAs for our missions in the DRC, Cote d'Ivoire and the Central Africa Republic. I call on Member States to provide adequate resources for the deployment of additional WPAs in these and other situations of concern. We must make this a regular feature of planning and budgeting." Secretary-General Ban also called for sustained funding for the Team of Experts that works to strengthen the capacity of national rule of law and justice actors.

He told the Security Council that the Team has worked with the authorities in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Liberia and South Sudan, and could do even more with the necessary backing.
