Turkish hero of the forest – Hayrettin KaracaListen /
Hayrettin Karaca, a 92 year old from Turkey, known as the ‘grandfather’ of the Turkish environmental movement has received numerous environment awards including the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) 500 in 1992.
Mr. Karaca, who had a successful textile business in the 1970s, became very concerned about the environmental degradation he saw during his travels across Turkey.
When his eldest son was ready to take over the business Mr. Karaca devoted his time on nature and eventually co-founded the TEMA Foundation to raise public awareness of environmental problems.
TEMA has mobilized 460,000 volunteers and planted more than 10 million seedlings.
UN Radio's May Yaacoub sat down with Mr. Karaca who spoke about the importance of forests through an interpreter.
