The United Nations stands ready to assist Bangladesh following the collapse of a garment factory earlier this week that killed more than 300 people, the UN Secretary-General said on Friday.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban Ki-moon said he is deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries caused by the incident, which occurred on the outskirts of the capital, Dhaka, on Wednesday.

Although some 2,000 people have been rescued since the collapse, according to reports, hundreds more are still missing.

Mr. Ban extended his sincere condolences to the Government and people of Bangladesh, and expressed his deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones or have been otherwise affected by this tragedy.
