Improving the livelihoods and economies of people who derive their living from forests is one of the goals of a UN conference which opened in Istanbul, Turkey, on Monday.

The 10th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, or UNFF 10, will also consider measures to increase the sustainable management of forests, which cover one-third of the Earth's land mass.

UN Radio's May Yaacoub is covering the conference and spoke to Jan McAlpine, Director of the UNFF Secretariat, who says forests are far more valuable beyond being sources of timber.
