Globalization and development in Sub-Saharan Africa

Listen /

Jomo Kwame Sundaram

"It's like opening a bird cage and expecting birds to fly in."

That is how Jomo Kwame Sundaram, author of ‘ Globalization and Development in Sub-Saharan Africa’, describes the failure of development policies to benefit Africa.

Mr. Sundaram is currently an Assistant-Secretary-General at the Food and Agriculture Organization, (FAO).

He tells UN Radio's Gerry Adams that Africa was told that if it opened up the doors to financial flows, there would be a net flow of funds from the capital-rich countries to the capital-poor countries.

Instead, the opposite has happened and Mr. Sundaram is concerned.
