Suspension of cash assistance to 10,000 families in Gaza due to a lack of funding has triggered demonstrations against the UN agency assisting Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

UNRWA spokesperson Sami Mshasha says because staff safety was jeopardized, a regular food distribution to about 25,000 people per day has been shut down.

However, he explains that in suspending the cash subsidies, "the poorest of the poor" in Gaza will be put on the priority list for an emergency job creation programme.

Sami Mshaha explains the situation to UN Radio's Patrick Maigua.
