The United Nations stands ready to assist China in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake in Sichuan province this past weekend.

That's what UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to media reports, nearly 200 people died and thousands more were injured in the quake, which struck on Saturday.

Mr. Ban says he was deeply saddened by the loss of life, injuries and destruction caused by the quake and its aftershocks.

The Secretary-General has extended his sincere condolences to the Chinese government and people, and expressed his deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones or were otherwise affected by the disaster.
