UN Secretary-General 'personally pained and distraught' at situation in SyriaListen /
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reiterated his call for the UN Security Council to intervene to try to resolve the conflict in Syria, which enters its third year this month.
Speaking at a press conference at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Mr Ban said that he's meeting the Joint Special Representative for Syria, Mr Lakhdar Brahimi, on Saturday to explore further political solutions to the crisis. He said that the violence cannot carry on.
"I'm personally pained and distraught by the way this situation is continuing and deteriorating and when I think how many more people would be killed in the coming days and months when we do not have any political solution."
He said that he's concerned about sectarian violence and spillover effects into neighbouring countries and has called on the UN Security Council, regional leaders and the people of Syria to unite to address the crisis.
