UN envoy highlights international support to Afghanistan

Listen /

Ján Kubiš , head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan

The United Nations and the international community are committed to Afghanistan, UN envoy Ján Kubiš told journalists in the capital, Kabul, on Wednesday.

Mr. Kubiš, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), spoke of international support to the country, both in the short-term, leading up to presidential elections in 2014, and beyond.

The mission chief was in New York last week to attend a Security Council meeting. Mr. Kubiš said he was encouraged by the number of countries who delivered messages of support for the future of Afghanistan.

The country is gearing up for a so-called "Transformation Decade" beginning in 2015.

The majority of foreign forces in Afghanistan are set to withdraw by the end of next year and Afghan authorities are also working with the international community towards taking greater ownership of development.
