UN envoy calls for swift action following killing of media professional in SomaliaListen /
The UN envoy in Somalia is calling for an end to "senseless violence" following the killing of a staff member of a local radio station.
Rahma Abdulkadir was reportedly shot and killed in the capital, Mogadishu, on Sunday night.
She is the first woman and third media professional to be killed in Somalia so far this year, according to Dr. Augustine Mahiga, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the country.
He said Somalia continues to be one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists to operate, with 18 journalists killed there in 2012.
Dr. Mahiga called on the country's recently-formed Independent Task Force on Human Rights and the law enforcement agencies to ensure perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
