Reported Syrian helicopter strikes in Lebanon, a grave source of concernListen /
The reported Syrian helicopter strikes on 18 March in the Lebanese region of Arsal, in violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, are a grave source of concern, says a UN note to correspondents in response to questions about Syrian air strikes in Lebanon.
The note from the UN Spokesperson's Office says that in his latest report to the Security Council, the Secretary-General warned against the serious and repeated cross-border incidents between Syria and Lebanon.
He called upon the Syrian Government to cease all violations of the border and to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon in accordance with Security Council resolutions.
According to the note, it was only last week that the Security Council unanimously underscored its grave concern over such incidents and underlined the importance of full respect for Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, in accordance with the council's resolutions.
The note says the Secretary-General stresses the importance of the Security Council’s call, and urges the Syrian authorities to heed that call. It concludes that it is imperative that all concerned in the region abide by their obligations under international law and prevent any escalation.
