Humanitarian official calls for release of abducted IDP representatives in SudanListen /
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan is urging the immediate release of a group of representatives of internally displaced people that was abducted earlier this week.
The 31 people were travelling to a conference in South Darfur escorted by peacekeepers from the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) when they were stopped by an armed group in military uniforms.
In a statement on Tuesday, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan Ali Al-Za'tari said he is extremely concerned about the incident.
He said according to media reports, the abduction was carried out by the Sudan Liberation Army's Abdul Wahid Nur faction.
Mr. Za'tari expressed hope that the combined efforts of the Sudanese Government and UNAMID will ensure the group's safe return.
