Commission on the Status of Women concludes in New York

Listen /

The outcome of the latest session of the Commission on the Status of Women is a testimony to countries' commitments to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

That assessment comes from UN Women, the United Nations entity for gender equality and women's empowerment, in a statement following the conclusion of the two-week meeting in New York on Friday.

The Commission adopted a document which calls for increased attention and accelerated action to prevent and respond to violence against women.

UN Women has welcomed what it describes as  "the important focus on prevention."

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that every woman and girl has the universal right to be free from all forms of violence, adding that states have a corresponding responsibility to turn that right into reality.

The Commission on the Status of Women meets annually at UN Headquarters to evaluate progress on gender equality and to formulate concrete policies which promote it.
