World Radio Day is observed on 13 February each year to celebrate the role of the medium in providing information over the airwaves.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which designated the day, says "in the age of new media, radio remains the medium that can carry any message to any place at any time."

In Somalia, Radio Bar-Kulan has played a critical role in providing information even when the Horn of African country was under the Al-Shabaab Islamist extremists.

To find out more about its work, UN Radio's Derrick Mbatha spoke on the line to the country's capital, Mogadishu, with Abdirahman Omar Osman, the Director of Radio Bar-Kulan.
