UN chief calls for strengthened partnership with the AmericasListen /
Countries in the Americas can contribute more to United Nations' efforts to solve global problems.
That's the message delivered by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
He said that global influence of the Americas is on the rise as many economies in the region are growing and democratic institutions are strengthening.
Mr. Ban spoke of the importance of a deeper strategic partnership between the United Nations and the OAS.
"That is my message today. I am convinced that the United Nations can play a greater role in your region just as your region can play an ever more important role for the United Nations. The time is right. You have experiences to share, ideas to spread, energy to help fuel global solutions." (24")
Mr. Ban said that over the last six years as United Nations Secretary-General he has worked closely with countries in the region and travelled throughout the Americas.
