Special Rapporteur calls for truth commission in MyanmarListen /
A UN human rights official has called for the creation of a truth commission in Myanmar.
Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Tomás Ojea Quintana said such a commission could address the issues of truth, justice and accountability during the previous military governments.
He said it would also be "crucial for the process of national reconciliation," and could "prevent future human rights violations by learning from the past."
According to Mr. Quintana, while there is improvement in the human rights situation in the country, there are significant human rights shortcomings that remain unaddressed.
The Special Rapporteur made his comments upon completion of his seventh mission to Myanmar.
