Panel discussion "Is good governance good for development?"

There is no evidence good governance is necessary for development, says Jomo Sundaram, an economist who is now Assistant Director-General for Social and Economic Development with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Mr. Sundaram was among the speakers at a UN panel discussion on the topic, "Is good governance good for development?"

He, along with Susan Woodward, a Professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and Journalist Daniel Kaufman had varying opinions on the subject at "Point Counter Point, A discussion forum on today's hot issues and global responses" a regular UN discussion forum.

Mr. Sundaram began by clarifying his position.

Gerry Adams, United Nations.
