Iraqi leaders urged to stand up against "atrocious" attacks following deadly car bomb explosionsListen /
A series of deadly car bombs in Iraq on Sunday has been strongly condemned by the top UN official in the country.
Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, said nothing can justify the attacks which occurred in several neighbourhoods in the capital, Baghdad.
Media reports say at least 20 people were killed and scores more wounded when several car bombs exploded across the city.
In a statement on Sunday, the UN envoy noted that once again, innocent civilians going about their daily business were targeted, bringing grief to their families and communities.
He said all Iraqi leaders have a responsibility to stand up to what he called "these atrocious crimes targeting the social fabric of the country."
