The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, is concerned about a riot in Uribana prison in Venezuela which left 58 inmates dead.
The riot, which took place on the 25th of January, also left 100 people injured.
Spokesperson for the human rights agency, Rupert Colville, explains the circumstances that led to the riot.
"It was during an arms seizure carried out by the authorities in the prison. This latest example reflects an alarming pattern of violence in Venezuelan prisons, which is a direct consequence, in my view of poor conditions in our prisons."
Rupert Colville says those conditions include chronic overcrowding, lack of access to basic services and the generalized presence of firearms.
