UN chief welcomes ceasefire in Kachin, MyanmarListen /
The ceasefire in the northern state of Kachin in Myanmar announced by the government on Friday has been welcomed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson on Sunday, the Secretary-General says that he is following the implementation of the ceasefire.
Tens of thousands of people were reportedly forced to flee their homes when the longstanding conflict in Kachin flared up just over a year-and-a-half ago.
Mr. Ban urges the government of Myanmar and rebel forces to create conditions for sustained peace in Kachin through enhanced confidence-building measures and political dialogue.
He also calls for renewed access to vulnerable civilian populations in the area to enable the supply of humanitarian assistance to them.
