• As fighting continues, people are fleeing their homes in northern Mali, according to the UN refugee agency. UNHCR says the people are going to Mauritania, Niger and Burkina Faso while others are being displaced within the country. Some people are leaving the north to escape the strict application of Sharia law by Islamist extremists.

German soccer star boots anti-AIDS efforts in South Africa

• German soccer star Michael Ballack visited South Africa recently to boost efforts to combat HIV and AIDS. Ballack who is also UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador, participated in a training exercise involving 50 young girls and boys. He says he was encouraged by the young people's efforts to prevent HIV infection.

IMF helps Burkina Faso develop an effective social safety net

Cash transfer

• Social safety nets in sub-Saharan Africa are still works-in-progress, according to the International Monetary Fund. The IMF has been working with the government of Burkina Faso to design a cash transfer system for those who need it most. The agency says that safety nets are essential in a country where many people live in chronic poverty.
