Geneva Agreement still a very good basis for a political solution in Syria: Brahimi

Listen /

Lakhdar Brahimi

The Joint UN-League of Arab States Special Representative for Syria wants the members of the UN Security Council to speak with one voice.

Lakhdar Brahimi tells UN Radio he believes  that the Geneva Agreement worked out by his predecessor Kofi Annan can work if the Council speaks with one voice.

He says that agreement was and still is a very good basis for a political solution in Syria.

”  The thing is, it has been interpreted in different ways by those – the people who have signed it and in particular – the five permanent members of the Security Council. So what I have been trying to do is to see if the P-5, starting with Russia and the United States come to an agreement and to a common understanding of what Geneva meant so that we can then take it as an international agreement resolution of the Security Council or something like that to be implemented and through negotiations between the two parties.”

Mr. Brahimi says that until now, efforts at starting negotiations between the conflicting parties have not been very successful. But he adds that the military campaigns have not been successful either in concluding the conflict.
