Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (right) meets Prime Minister Bainimarama of the Republic of Fiji, on the occasion of Fiji's assumption of the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China (G-77).

A ceremony to hand over the helm and the torch of the chairmanship of the Group of 77 developing countries and China took place at the United Nations recently.

Last year, the Government of Algeria led the group. Ambassador Mourad Benmehidi said his country had committed to honouring that difficult task as part of the country's foreign policy.

This year, the leadership of the G77 goes to the Republic of Fiji, a historic one for the Pacific islands region.

Beng Poblete-Enriquez reports.
