UN Women chief calls for more investment in women

There is a simple solution to global challenges ranging from poverty to climate change to food security: invest in women. That message comes from Michelle Bachelet, head of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women.  Ms. Bachelet this week addressed the meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jakarta, Indonesia, which is where Michele Zaccheo, head of the UN Information Centre in the country, caught up with her.

Security Council supports women's role in the peace process

The role of women's organizations and civil society groups in preventing violence and resolving conflict was highlighted during a Security Council meeting on Women, Peace and Security.  In his address, UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson spoke about his recent visit to Mali where women told him of the abuses and sexual violence they are facing now that the north of the country is under extremist rule.

For a Sudanese refugee, the journey of many miles ends in tragedy


The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) believes "every refugee has a unique story of courage and determination," and the agency hopes sharing their stories will lead to better understanding of their realities.  In this feature prepared by the agency, we meet a woman called Oumi who fled Sudan more than three months ago with her husband and children on a journey that proved to be heartbreaking.
