More than 500 people are reported to have been killed and hundreds more are missing after Typhoon Bopha devastated parts of southern Philippines.

The United Nations stands ready to provide humanitarian assistance to the Philippines which has been hit by a typhoon, says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
