UN group wants Egypt draft constitution to ensure women's rightsListen /
A UN expert group is calling for a review of Egypt's draft constitution ahead of a planned referendum this weekend.
The UN Working Group on the issue of discrimination against women in law has expressed concern about equality, non-discrimination and protection and promotion of women's rights in the document.
In a statement on Friday, the experts said almost no women were represented in the Constituent Assembly which drafted the new constitution, and that women's perspectives had been "grossly under-represented."
While welcoming several positive provisions in the draft, such as free maternal and health services, the experts said other issues on women's equality need to be aligned with international human rights standards.
