Lakhdar Brahimi

The joint Special Representative of the United Nations and League of Arab States has proposed the formation of a transitional government in Syria.

Lakhdar Brahimi spoke to reporters in the Syrian capital, Damascus on Thursday ahead of his trip to Moscow this weekend.

He spoke as the government and the opposition continue their military confrontation in the country.

Mr. Brahimi says the proposed transitional government should have full executive powers.

"This government will assume power during the transitional period, which will end with elections. These elections will be presidential if it is agreed that the system will remain presidential as is currently the case or parliamentary elections if there is agreement that the system in Syria is to be changed to a parliamentary system"

Mr. Brahimi urged all parties involved in the Syrian conflict to endorse his proposal.
