There is concern about sexual violence in Central African Republic

• There is rising concern about sexual and gender-based violence in the Central African Republic this week as rebels advanced towards the capital Bangui. The UN Secretary-General has condemned the attacks by the rebels. His Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict who has just returned from the country says gender-based violence must stop.

UNICEF helps HIV-positive teens in Namibia realize their dreams

• East and Southern Africa remain the areas most heavily affected by the HIV epidemic, according to UNAIDS. In Namibia and initiative from the government, UNICEF and the non-profit agency, Positive Vibes helps HIV-positive children deal with their status. The Teen Club reaches about 400 children and young people in total.

Probe into LRA poaching of African elephants welcomed by CITES

• The Security Council has called for a probe into alleged involvement of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in the poaching of African elephants. The Secretariat of the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has welcomed the call. It says it is ready to support the investigation.
