Secretary-General deplores North Korea rocket launch
Listen /UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is concerned about the negative consequences on regional peace and stability following Wednesday's launch of a long-range rocket by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
In a statement, Mr. Ban called the move regrettable, saying it was a clear violation of a UN Security Council resolution which bans the country from conducting ballistic missile tests.
According to media reports, North Korea launched the rocket shortly before 10 am local time from a site in the west of the country.
The Secretary-General is in contact with governments concerned, the statement continued, and has reaffirmed his commitment to working for peace on the Korean peninsula.
North Korea had reportedly notified the International Maritime Organization (IMO) earlier this month of its plans to launch a rocket between 10-22 December.
A previous attempt in April had failed.
