LRA continues to terrorize people in Central Africa

• Efforts are under way to stop the activities of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in Central Africa. Although the rebels from Uganda are estimated to be less than 500 combatants, they continue to terrorize people in the region. A top UN envoy says preparations are being finalized to implement a regional strategy to combat the LRA.

• The volatility in prices of raw commodities has affected many regions in recent years, including those in Sub Saharan Africa. That's because the price of a commodity, whether oil or cocoa, can make or break the health of a country in this region. At the same time, some countries in Sub-Saharan Africa depend on imports of critical commodities, including food to feed their population.

• People in the Somali town of Jawhar now live without the stringent rules of the Al –Shabaab Islamic extremists. On 9 December, the Somali National Army, supported by African Union troops captured the town in the Middle Shabelle region. An AU commander says the challenge now is to win the hearts and minds of the people in the town.
