Investing in women is a "smart thing to do": Michelle BacheletListen /
That's the message from Michelle Bachelet, the head of UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, who addressed the meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday.
Ms. Bachelet spoke with UN Radio after addressing the OIC and stressed the important role of women in solving global problems.
"If we want to ensure that we will achieve the MDGs, Millennium Development Goals, or if we want to really tackle poverty or climate change or food security etc. in all main challenges in humanity, women are not only disproportionately affected but can be part of the solution. And this means women in the economy, women in politics, ending violence against women. So I would say in one sentence, investing in women is not only the right thing to do but the smart thing to do."
Ms. Bachelet said that Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population in the world, has made progress in promoting women's rights.
