International Human Solidarity Day celebrates unity in diversity
Listen /"People across the world are demanding greater political freedom, accountability and equality," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on the occasion of International Human Solidarity Day, 20 December.
The Secretary-General said the world can "best shape solutions for a more secure, sustainable and prosperous future" by acting as one. "Solidarity is crucial to solving problems in our interconnected world," he continued.
People on the Day are encouraged to promote campaigns on issues such as banning land mines or fighting against poverty.
A 2005 General Assembly resolution established International Human Solidarity Day, designed to celebrate unity in diversity.
The Day also aims to remind people of the importance of solidarity in working toward eradicating poverty.
