Ethiopian refugees in Yemen

• Earlier this week more than 200 Ethiopian migrants were returned to their country from Yemen on a flight chartered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). They are part of hundreds of Ethiopian migrants who are stranded in and around Yemen's north-western town of Haradh. The migrants were unable to enter Saudi Arabia in search of work.

Sahel crisis under spotlight in Security Council

• The ongoing crisis in the Sahel region of Africa was under the spotlight in the Security Council on Monday. The semi-arid region is facing a number of problems, including drought, hunger and conflict in Mali. Morocco, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council in December, convened the high-level level meeting on the Sahel.

Bad policies blamed for underdevelopment in Africa: UN scholar

• A number of African countries are making progress in economic development, according to a scholar at the UN University. In the 1970s and 1980s, bad policies adopted by national governments were blamed for underdevelopment on the continent. The UN scholar says those policies resulted in inefficiency, overregulation and misallocation of resources.
