UN experts call for release of two Iranian prisoners
Listen /
A group of United Nations independent human rights experts have called on the Iranian authorities to immediately release two prominent human rights activists.
The detained Iranians are Nasrin Sotoudeh, a prominent human rights lawyer, and Jafar Panahi, an internationally acclaimed film-maker.
Donn Bobb reports.
Nasrin Sotoudeh and Jafar Panahi were recently awarded the prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament.
The human rights experts say the imprisonment of Ms. Sotoudeh and Mr. Panahi appears to be directly linked to their work in the defence of human rights.
The experts say they are particularly concerned about the deteriorating health of Ms. Sotoudeh who went on hunger strike on 17 October to protest against her prison conditions and the restrictions imposed on members of her family.
They urge the Iranian authorities to honour their international obligations and commitments to protect and promote human rights.
