Listen /

Ban Ki-moon

Israelis and Palestinians have been urged to avoid further escalation of violence in Gaza and Southern Israel and to ensure the protection of civilians.

The appeal comes from UN Secretary-General Ban following reported rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza and Israeli air strikes on Gaza which killed six Palestinians.

Charles Appel reports.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Secretary-General says he is concerned about the new wave of violence in Gaza and Southern Israel which has killed and wounded several Palestinians, including civilians, on both sides.

Mr. Ban says he deplores the loss of life and urges Israelis and Palestinians to immediately de-escalate tensions.

The Secretary-General strongly condemns indiscriminate rocket attacks by Palestinian militants targeting Israel and calls for an immediate halt in these attacks.

Mr. Ban also calls on Israel to exercise maximum restraint.

He says both sides should do everything to avoid further escalation and must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians at all times.
