UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for restraint in the Golan Heights where United Nations peacekeepers are monitoring the ceasefire between Syrian and Israel forces since 1974.

The call came amid reports of clashes between Syrian forces and the armed opposition near the ceasefire line which drew a response from the Israeli military.

Donn Bobb reports.

According to reports, a stray shell from fighting between Syrian troops and opposition fighters landed at an Israeli army post in the Golan Heights on Sunday.

Israeli forces reportedly responded by firing a warning missile into Syrian territory.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement on Sunday expressing his concern about the potential for an escalation of the conflict.

He called for utmost restraint and urged Syria and Israel to uphold their Disengagement Agreement and to stop firing of any kind across the ceasefire line.
