The destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy in the Caribbean and the eastern United States has made news across the globe. As the head of the UN office for the region (ESCAP) recently observed, Asia-Pacific certainly is not immune to natural disasters. In launching the 2012 Asia-Pacific Disaster Report, Dr. Noeleen Heyzer said floods, earthquakes, mudslides, typhoons and tsunamis are "a harsh and often devastating reality of everyday life" for the region's people.

New UNEP Goodwill Ambassador promotes benefits of a green economy

An Indian banker and environmental economist has been named the latest Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Pavan Sukhdev will help to create greater public awareness of environmental issues and to inspire action supporting the UNEP mandate and priorities. He joins fellow Goodwill Ambassadors Gisele Bündchen, the Brazilian model; American actor Don Cheadle; French photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand, and Chinese actress Li Binging.

Dairy cooperatives help support and stabilize rural Afghan villages

As Afghanistan prepares to assume responsibility for its national security following the departure of foreign forces in 2014, an unexpected form of peace-building is taking root in some of the country's rural villages. Thousands of dairy farmers have formed cooperatives which are not only helping them to earn money, but are also supporting efforts to unite and stabilize their communities.
