Situation in Syria getting worse but parties not ready for an internal solution: Brahimi
Listen /The situation in Syria is bad and getting worse but unfortunately, the parties themselves are not ready to have an internal solution.
That's the assessment of the Joint Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.
He told reporters shortly after briefing the UN Security Council Thursday that the region is also not really capable at this time of helping for a peaceful solution.
"The place where a peaceful solution can be initiated is the Security Council. I have been challenged to produce a plan. I think that we now have the elements of the plan, but these elements cannot be put together until the council has come together and is ready to adopt a resolution that will be the basis for a political process."
Mr. Brahimi says it's the Syrians who will decide what kind of regime they will have, adding that there's no doubt that the people of Syria want change and real change, not cosmetic change. He will brief the UN General Assembly on Friday.
