Security Council demands withdrawal of M23 from Goma in DR Congo

• The Security Council is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the M23 rebel group from Goma, the capital of North Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Security Council met on Tuesday evening following the takeover of Goma by the M23 rebel fighters. In a resolution adopted unanimously, the Council also demanded an immediate end to all support to the M23.

Sub-Saharan Africa reports "strong reduction" in HIV infections

• Efforts to fight HIV and AIDS are producing results around the world, according to a report by UNAIDS. The report, launched ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December, shows that new HIV infections have dropped by more than 50 per cent in 25 countries. It reports "strong reduction" in HIV infections in Sub-Saharan Africa.

African Union police help bring law and order to Somalia


• Bringing law and order to Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, long known for lawlessness and insecurity, is a challenging task. The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is helping Somali police to do just that. It has a special unit of 140 men from Uganda and Nigeria, who are part of what is called Formed Police Units (FPU).
